The Romani language is finally in Google Translate, one of 110 languages added in the biggest expansion of the program ever
Google has announced that it has added 110 new languages to its translation program, including Romani. This significant update represents the biggest expansion of language support in Google's history and opens up new communication opportunities for 614+ million people worldwide
Google Translate aims to eliminate language barriers and aid people with better understanding the world around them. Thanks to its use of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models, Google has managed to add hundreds of languages to its translator, both major and minor ones.
In addition to Romani, the newly-supported languages include Cantonese, Manx, N’Ko and Tamazight. The opportunity to translate from or into Romanes, which is spoken by Romani communities worldwide, is a big innovation.
“We welcome this update and we have waited a long time for it!” the European Roma Grassroots Organizations Network announced. When adding new languages to Google Translate, many factors are taken into consideration, including dialects, different spelling standards, and regional variations.
Many languages do not have a single standard, unified form, which means there is no “correct” variant of them. For that reason, Google does its best to prioritize the most frequently used variants of each language.
“For example, Romani is a language that has many dialects all throughout Europe. Our models produce text that is closest to Southern Vlax Romani, a commonly used variety online. But it also mixes in elements from others, like Northern Vlax and Balkan Romani,” Google said in a press release.
