Controversy over Elon Musk's apparent Nazi salute on the day of Trump's inauguration sparks a furious response on social media
Billionaire and tech magnate Elon Musk became a subject of controversy shortly after giving a speech of gratitude on U.S. President Donald Trump's inauguration day (20 January). A gesture he made onstage has sparked speculation on social media as to whether it was a Nazi salute.
During his speech to rally-goers in the Capital One Arena, Musk put his right hand to his heart and then quickly extended his right arm toward the audience. Some social media users called it a “Hitler salute”.
Others read the gesture as an “innocent” expression of enthusiasm. “He’s a f&*!ing fascist, I’m not surprised,” one user of the X social media site, owned by Musk, opined.
However, others are rejecting the criticism and point out that in their view, the gesture was natural in the context of the speech. Czech political scientist Jan Charvát, an expert on extremism, is being cautious.
“I do not believe this is a Nazi salute, but I understand it will look like one to lots of people and many will be treating it as such,” Charvát said, adding that the scandal could distract from more important aspects of Musk’s political actions. Together with Vivek Ramaswamy, Musk is meant to be joining the Trump administration as head of a Department of Governmental Efficiency.
In his speech to the rally, Musk expressed appreciation for the support of his adherents and promised safer cities, border control, and responsible government spending. Social media is full of sharp commentary and speculation about the gesture he made onstage.
Some are calling for the situation to be clarified, others consider the entire matter to be overblown.
