Emil Voráč: Social media is destroying our culture and values, it has become a battleground for aggressors and liars
No, absolutely not! I don't want to spend any more time on social media. I see what happens to those who spend too much time there, who can't stand the feeling of missing out, who are interested in whether old lady Blažková uses toilet paper or old torn-up copies of Rudé právo because she has tons remaining from the previous regime in her cellar. I see that people who are addicted to social media become more and more frustrated and spread their frustration further.
Nobody there is interested in examples of what is good, so if I wanted to become recognized and have enough followers, I would have to stab somebody in the jugular, and to maintain my popularity, I’d have to brutally threaten anybody who opposed me in that style – “If you have a problem with what I did, come tell me face to face and I’ll stab you in the back.” Yes, examples of that kind pull people in, so on social media various aggressors and vulgar individuals are multiplying like mushrooms after a rainstorm.
Of course, it’s necessary to present my stabbing of somebody in the neck or the back as being in the interest of the larger public.
A cardiologist who extends the lives of heart attack patients, or a violin virtuoso, has no business being on social media and will never earn respect there.
Knowing how to promote yourself is an art. Knowing how to sell the fact that I’ve beaten somebody’s face to a pulp is really an art that not everybody can master. It doesn’t matter what the reason is, what matters is how many times I kicked him in the head while humiliating him in the most vulgar possible terms, and if I add his friends and family to the mix, then I can say my path to success has been made.
I may be stupid or out of touch with reality, but all I have to know is how to interest people on social media, and that’s actually an art mastered just by a select few!
