When I heard about a Sinti guy saving a lady from certain death, my heart
filled with pride. For once, finally, some local and national journalists
reported news about a beautiful, spontaneous, heroic act of civil value.
The articles about the incident that I browsed online were not totally free
from bitter comments written by Roma and Sinti “haters”, but I still smiled to
myself thinking about this young, 23-year-old superhero.
I thought: what if that Sinti boy hadn’t been there? I bet the victim of this
accident will never forget that the so-called “nomads” are not a nation of
beggars and thieves without any attachment to this country and its people. On
the contrary, here is a magnificent example of civic feeling carried out by an
Italian Sinto from Vicenza.
There are some valuable, precious, proud human beings among the Roma and
Sinti, as there are in every other human nation, and Sedrik Dori is a vivid
example of this!
I thought, why not report this to the press, let the news reach all the
corners of the world, even where biased journalists do nothing but write
horrific articles to demolish the public image of Roma and Sinti worldwide with
their stories full of alleged crimes, stolen babies and other illicit
traffickings.
Here is the story of the day, please pass it on to those looking for
community “role-models”, because this time this young man qualifies for a medal
for outstanding civic service, for his values, and for having put his life on
the line, prioritizing an individual unknown to him over his own instinct for
self-preservation.
In Vicenza, Italy, a lady aged 37 was driving her Jeep Cherokee when she lost
control of the vehicle and ended up offroad, falling from the viale Diaz into
the river Bacchiglione. Sedrik Dori, 23 years old, saw the accident and
immediately jumped in and swam the cold water of the river to get the lady out
of the vehicle and take her to the riverbank, where they were both taken into an
ambulance due to the risks of hypothermia from the winter climate and water
conditions.
