ROMEA TV broadcasting LIVE today from Prague commemoration of Roma and Sinti Holocaust victims
On Friday, 10 March a commemorative ceremony will be held in Prague 6 to honor the Roma and Sinti who were murdered by the Nazis during the Second World War. The event is organized by the Municipal Department of Prague 6 in collaboration with the Centre for Roma and Sinti in Prague, which is part of the Museum of Romani Culture.
ROMEA TV will broadcast the commemorative ceremony live online. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the mass transport of Roma and Sinti people from the grounds of the forced labor camp in Ruzyně to the Auschwitz II-Birkenau Concentration and Extermination Camp.
During the night of 2 August 1944 and the early morning hours of 3 August 1944, the Nazis destroyed what was called the “Gypsy Family Camp” at Auschwitz and murdered more than 4,000 Roma and Sinti people imprisoned there. The Holocaust of the Roma was Nazi Germany’s attempt to exterminate Roma and Sinti in Europe.
It is estimated that half a million Roma and Sinti were murdered at that time. This genocide is frequently ignored or marginalized in both historical research and public awareness.
The commemorative ceremony will be held at 11:00 CET in the park at Staré náměstí in Prague 6 – Ruzyně. Representatives of the Municipal Department, the Museum of Romani Culture, Romani organizations and eyewitnesses to these events will be present.
