Romea NEWSLETTER: Romani pupils still greatly segregated in the Czech education system. Updated situation, causes, and efforts to solve this problem

Data on the number of Romani pupils in the Czech Republic’s preschools, primary and secondary education have been produced since the 2016/2017 school year through the qualified estimates of the Czech Ministry for Education, Youth and Sport (Ministerstvo školství, mládeže a tělovýchovy - MŠMT). From the available data for the 2020/2021 school year it follows that about 950,000 pupils attended primary school, 35,000 of whom were Romani.
According to an analysis by the Office of the Public Defender of Rights, which reviewed the data, of the 4,211 primary schools in the Czech Republic there are 262 that are more than 34 % Romani. There are 126 schools where more than 50 % of the pupils are Romani, and there are 17 schools….
