Romea.cz delivers reporting on Romani people, and you can directly support its development
For more than 21 years, news server Romea.cz has been delivering the high-quality, independent reporting that was recently given the highest possible ranking by the Endowment for Independent Journalism in the Czech Republic (Nadační fond nezávislé žurnalistiky). The ROMEA organization, which publishes Romea.cz, has launched a fundraiser for producing original commentary and reporting in 2024.
As of early February the campaign has raised about EUR 1,300, but its aim is to raise EUR 4,000. Since 2003, ROMEA has dedicated its work to combating discrimination through many activities and projects.
News server Romea.cz is one of the main pillars on which ROMEA is building its efforts to improve the lives of Romani people. The server has reported on important moments during the last two decades, and not just regarding issues involved with Romani-related subject matter.
“News server Romea.cz and its journalists bore witness to the many anti-Romani demonstrations held in the Czech Republic, delivered accurate information during the COVID-19 pandemic, and contributed to de-escalating tensions in Czech society during the wave of migration resulting from the war on Ukraine,” says Editor-in-Chief Zdeněk Ryšavý, adding that what is most important is that the server delivers Romani people’s perspectives on various events. During more than 20 years of hard work, the news server has supported many starting young artists by giving them a platform on which to present themselves; has collaborated on investigating scandals that have moved not just the Romani community, but the entire country and beyond; and last but not least, has published tens of thousands of high-quality articles and video reportages.
That fact has been confirmed by the recent “A” rating given to news server Romea.cz by the Czech Endowment for Independent Journalism. This rating means news server Romea.cz upholds high journalistic standards, is transparent, and works with content in a professional way.
The ROMEA organization has a new aim for 2024, and that is to publish more exclusive, original commentary and news reporting which readers will not find anywhere else. The organization has launched a fundraising campaign called “News About Roma Not Only For Roma!” to demonstrate that independent, truthful reporting about Romani people can be found on news server Romea.cz.
“During December 2023 we managed to raise about EUR 1,300 and we are doing our best to use those funds for the preparation of exclusive articles or video reportage. Thanks to this support we organized and broadcast live a public discussion with the Czech Labor and Social Affairs Minister. Rena Horvátová prepared a profile of Romani activist Patrik Kotlár, who told his own moving story as a gay man in the Romani community of a small town in the Czech Republic. Jarmila Balážová has written a commentary about the bill to facilitate voting by mail from abroad in Czech national elections and what it means for the Romani community. She also produced an audio version of the piece that we shared on social media in various formats,” Ryšavý said, listing what news server Romea.cz has managed to improve about its commentary and reporting thanks to the financing raised so far.
“The fundraiser is still open. We want to raise EUR 4,000,” Ryšavý said, adding that the campaign is available on the ROMEA organization’s social media profiles and can also be found here.
Businesses, individuals and organizations can support the fundraising campaign through the online donation form or by sharing information about it through their networks.
