The KHAMORO World Romani Festival in Prague this year is coming to a close with an exhibition of large-format paintings by eminent Romani artist Zoran Tairović, currently on view at the Gallery of the New Town Hall (Novoměstská radnice). The exhibition, entitled TAROT/THE MAJOR ARCANA includes 20 original works including a multidisciplinary, multimedia presentation of more than 30 of his pieces.

His painting “The Twilight or the Dawn of Europe”, on view in the exhibition, is an artistic rendering of the death of Romani community member Stanislav Tomáš, who died after a controversial intervention against him by police in Teplice. He is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Novi Sad (ACIMSI) in graphics and painting, and holds a Master’s and PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies, Applied Arts Management, also from ACIMSI.

Tairović is a typical example of an all-around artistic talent. His multimedia artworks have won several prestigious global awards and he is also the author of the first-ever Romani-composed opera, a musical, and several documentary films.

He has participated in many cultural events and festivals both abroad and in the Czech Republic with performance art. He is the director and founder of the international festival of documentary films with Romani-related subject matter, FROM, which is held annually in the small town of Mali Iđoš, Serbia.

The artist has also worked as an Adviser to the Vice President of the Republic of Serbia for Roma issues. 9 December is the last day of the exhibit.

This year marked the 23rd annual KHAMORO festival in Prague. Just as it did last year, the format was influenced by the COVID-19 situation, which means some concerts were held in the spring and the events have been spread out over a longer period of time.

KHAMORO’s musical offerings ended in September with a gala concert of traditional Romani music at Prague’s Roxy club. The festival is organized by the Slovo 21, z.s. organization and the company Studio Production Saga, s.r.o.
