Museum of Romani Culture launches reconstruction of villa housing the new Centre for the Roma and Sinti in Prague
The Museum of Romani Culture has announced that it has chosen the construction firm to perform the reconstruction of its villa in the Dejvice neighborhood of Prague on Velvarská Street. The villa will serve as the headquarters of the new Centre for the Roma and Sinti in Prague (CRSP), which aims to present and support the culture and history of the Roma in the Czech capital.
The reconstruction should be completed during August 2024. Today at 14:00 CET, details including the name of the winning company are being publicized from the garden of the villa, where the building site will be handed over and the construction work will begin.
The online ROMEA TV channel is broadcasting the event live. The Centre for the Roma and Sinti in Prague is a project of the Brno-based Museum of Romani Culture, which has long striven to expand its activities to Prague.
The villa has been administered by the museum since 2019 and preparations for its reconstruction have been underway ever since. In June of this year a public tender was announced for the building’s reconstruction and nine contractors applied.
The museum has assessed their bids and chosen the best one. The ambition of the CRSP is to become a venue for dialogue, encounters and mutual understanding between members of the majority society, the Roma and the Sinti in the Czech Republic.
The CRSP will hold various cultural, educational and expert events such as concerts, exhibitions, lectures, seminars and workshops. It will also collaborate with other institutions and organizations which are involved with Romani-related subject matter.
