Kamil Polakovič, the King of Romani Songs, has passed away in Slovakia
The singer Kamil Polakovič of Trnava, Slovakia passed away on 16 August 2022 at the age 47 after a long and difficult illness, according to a family member who confirmed the news to Gipsy Television. In Slovakia, Mr. Polakovič was called the King of Romani Songs, and many of his colleagues and politicians of Romani origin have been reacting to the news.
His colleagues from the City Boys group wrote: “Today our King of Romani Songs, Kamil Polakovič, has left us. We will never forget you, you will stay in our hearts forever.”
“Both Romani and non-Romani people drew on his creative work. His musical style was authentic, it will remain here forever. Anybody who knows me knows how much I loved City Boys and especially Kamil. I always wanted to play with him. He influenced various well-known performing artists through his work. He was also involved in the early careers of Rytmus and Kmeťoband. Kamil, we will miss you. Rest in peace,” Slovak MP Peter Pollák, Jr. wrote.
Igor Kmeťo, Sr. has responded to news of the singer’s death as well. “Writing these words is difficult for me. One of our greatest singers has died. Kamil Polakovič was a great artist. He brought joy to thousands of people with his gorgeous voice. We will miss you terribly. Romani and Czechoslovak culture has lost a great singing figure. Sincere condolences to your family. May eternal light shine on you. We will never forget you. Sending greetings to heaven,” he posted to Facebook.
Mr. Polakovič was active on the music scene in Slovakia for more than 25 years. He had been fighting a difficult illness for a long time.
One of the singer’s legs had to be amputated and he became a wheelchair user before passing away. The funeral took place on 19 August at 15:00 in Trnava, Slovakia.
