Czech Republic's Liberec Region holds first-ever art competition for Romani children

The Czech Republic's Liberec Regional Authority has held its first-ever art competition for Romani children on the subject of "My Family". Seventy contestants between the ages of four and 15 from all over the region submitted.
The competition’s results were announced during a ceremony held at the Liberec Regional Authority, where all who submitted were appreciated. Václav Strouhal, Coordinator for Foreign Nationals and National Minority Affairs in the Liberec Region, informed news server Romea.cz of the event.
The contest featured three different age categories and the three best artists were chosen in each one. They received stuffed animals as prizes from the Governor of the Liberec Region, Martin Půta, and Vice-Governor Petr Tulpa.
The competition was part of the region’s campaign promoting foster parenting, TO HAVE A FAMILY AND A HOME: “A matter of course, or a rarity?” (MÍT DOMOV A RODINU: “Samozřejmost, nebo vzácnost?”). The awards ceremony included a cultural program prepared by the Romani dance ensemble Amare Bachtale Čave from the Academy of Romani Talent (Akademie romského talentu z.s.) in Jablonec nad Nisou and the Bengale Manusha group from Velké Hamry.
The dancers captivated the audience with their ardent rhythms and colorful costumes. Richard Samko, the famous journalist, moderated the program.
The art contest for Romani children was the first ever and the region plans to repeat it in years to come. The aim of the competition is to promote integration and mutual understanding between the majority society and Romani people and to make Romani potential and talent visible.
