Czech Republic: US firms offer internships to Romani students

The Open Society Fund Prague, in collaboration with the Embassy of the United States of America and the American Chamber of Commerce in Prague, are offering young Romani people internships of several months’ duration with successful American firms doing business in the Czech Republic. The internships are intended for Romani students enrolled in either on-campus or distance studies at colleges and high schools, as well as for college and high school graduates up to age 30.

The internships are paid and can be applied for on an ongoing basis. Firms accepting interns include, for example, IBM, the Prague Marriott Hotel, and the Zátiší Catering Group.  

It will also be possible to intern at the Embassy of the United States of America in Prague. "On Friday, 4 April 2014, we will hold a meeting for students in Prague. During the two-hour program, five international firms from various areas of business offering paid internships will introduce themselves to the students. This will expand the students’ horizons and they will be able to get information about opportunities for personal and professional development," Filip Rameš of Open Society Fund Prague told news server Romea.cz.  

The student meeting will begin at 10:00 AM on 4 April at the American Center (Tržiště 13, Prague 1). IBM

IBM is offering internships for the following positions:

    administrative staffer
    IT staffer (technical support, software testing, etc.)

    Workplace: IBM Office, Prague 4
    Required education: High school (focus on IT an advantage)
    Work experience: Preferred but not necessary
    Required languages: English – medium advanced
    Personal requirements and skills: Work with a PC, MS Office – Word, Excel
    Length of internship: June – September
    Hours: 20 hours per week

Marriott Hotel

Marriot is offering internships for the following positions:

    receptionist
    waiter/waitress

    Workplace: Prague Marriott Hotel, Praha 1
    Required education: High school
    Work experience: Preferred but not necessary
    Required languages: English – advanced
    Personal requirements and skills: We are looking for people who are enthusiastic about working with high motivation
    Length of internship: two months (July – August)
    Hours: 40 hours per week

    Personal requirements and skills: We are looking for people who are enthusiastic about working with high motivation
    Length of internship: four to six months
    Hours: 40 hours per week

    Length of internship: Two months (July – August), opportunity for long-term work as well
