Czech presidential candidates Fischer, Hilšer, Nerudová and Středula all say they would fly the Romani flag at Prague Castle if elected
Pavel Fischer, Marek Hilšer, Danuše Nerudová and Josef Středula would all fly the Romani flag on the appropriate occasions at Prague Castle if they were to become the head of state. The candidates made their statements during the Aréna N debate organized by Deník N.
“Decidedly yes. There are rather a lot of occasions on which the Romani flag could fly there too. Why not?” Středula said in response to a question from debate moderator Jan Moláček as to whether he would fly the Romani flag if elected.
“Romani people are citizens of this country, it’s a minority. I also see no reason why the flag couldn’t be flown,” candidate Hilšer responded.
“The Roma need recognition, including from the president, so yes,” agreed Fischer. Nerudová was of the same opinion.
“Yes, and I believe a president should do far more than just fly the Romani flag,” Nerudová replied. All four candidates also agreed that the rainbow flag of the LGBT+ community could also be flown or that they would send official greetings as head of state for Muslim holidays and others.
The four candidates were responding to questions in front of a live audience in Prague’s Vršovice quarter to questions from moderators Renata Kalenská and Jan Moláček. Candidates Andrej Babiš and Petr Pavel refused the invitation to the debate.
