Pavel Novotný, the mayor of Řeporyje (Civic Democratic Party - ODS) has sharply attacked Czech Senator Jana Zwyrtek Hamplová for having proposed the establishment of separate classes for Romani children last Thursday during her speech on the floor of the Senate. Pavel Novotný, the mayor of Řeporyje (Civic Democratic Party – ODS) has sharply attacked Czech Senator Jana Zwyrtek Hamplová for having proposed the establishment of separate classes for Romani children last Thursday during her speech on the floor of the Senate. Hamplová claimed such arrangements would be for the good of the children and would not be discriminatory.
Novotný called the senator racist and added a vulgar term of abuse to his comment. Hamplová is now alleging that a wave of support has been expressed for her after the mayor’s tweet.
“Zwyrtek is a racist c***. I wrote this tweet and I am aware that I should not speak about a woman this way. She is a pathetic, racist c***!” Novotný posted, launching an argument in the comments beneath the post in which Hamplová was defended by political commentator Petr Holec, who appears on the online television channel XTV.
Hamplová then posted to Facebook that a wave of support had come to her over the mayor’s remark. “That gentleman couldn’t have done anything better. After his vulgar insults, such a wave of support came to me that I had a very beautiful Sunday. I would like to very much thank Petr Holec, who defended me publicly against the Řeporyje level, and I also thank everybody who sent me text messages, e-mails, etc.,” she said.
The senator is also alleging that her remarks have been taken out of context. “The one sentence that was abused by pro-Government media to lynch me, especially after my open support for the Olympian David Svoboda, will be explained next week in a TV broadcast,” she said, later clarifying that she will appear on the “News and Commentary” program on public broadcaster ČT 24 on Monday.
