Hana Gelnarová, an influencer and MMA fighter, went on trial before the District Court in Ostrava, Czech Republic on 25 February. According to the indictment, she was charged for publishing to social media a video of herself and her friends giving the Nazi salute.

Gelnarová confessed to her actions and requested conditional suspension of her prosecution. The court agreed to her request.

However, she still has to donate CZK 50,000 [EUR 2,000] to crime victims. “I would like to apologize once more. The indictment is true. I regret this whole situation. I mean that sincerely. This should never have happened. I am aware of my guilt,” the 23-year-old, who is followed by about 600,000 people on social media, told the court.

The video appeared on social media last August. Gelnarová initially claimed to have been imitating a drum majorette when she made the gesture.

Although she quickly withdrew the video and apologized, police started investigating the case. Her legal representative requested the court temporarily suspend her prosecution.

Gelnarová’s lawyer proposed she donate CZK 30,000 [EUR 1,200] to a bank account dedicated to crime victims. Judge Dalibor Zecha approved the motion.

However, the judge increased the amount of the donation to CZK 50,000 [EUR 2,000]. “I think this will not cause you any existential problems,” news server iDNES. cz reported him as saying, given the defendant’s reported income and minimal obligations.

Gelnarová is meant to pay the money in the near future. If she does so, the judge will suspend her prosecution and release her from sentencing.

If she fails to pay, she faces between six months and three years in prison for promoting and supporting a movement seeking to suppress human rights and freedoms. Gelnarová is famous as an MMA competitor, among other things.

She has also featured in “Like House” and “Survivor”, both reality television shows. Other people were also captured in her video making gestures reminiscent of the Nazi salute.

Those shown in the video marched around giving the gesture to a German-language song playing in the background. However, Gelnarová alone was brought to trial.

“We see the commission of a criminal deed in the fact that the defendant published the video to a social media network. The others did not do that,” the prosecutor told the Czech News Agency (ČTK).

Defense attorney Petr Kausta told iDNES.cz that at a time when a similar gesture is being made by the richest man in the world and also, for example, by an MEP relying on parliamentary immunity, he sees it as “sad” that other cases of the same behavior end up in court. “However, I understand that this has to be reviewed,” Kausta said.
