On Saturday, 23 December, the memories of the victims of the tragic mass shooting at Charles University's Faculty of Arts will be honored with an official day of mourning in the Czech Republic. Throughout the country, flags will be flown at half mast.

The Government made the decision at an emergency cabinet session attended by Czech President Petr Pavel and the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Markéta Pekarová Adamová (TOP 09). Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala (Civic Democratic Party – ODS) announced the day of mourning after the meeting.

Fiala called on the public to honor the memory of the victims of the tragedy with a minute of silence on Saturday. Bells will be rung throughout the republic.

The mass shooting in the center of Prague is the greatest such tragedy in the Czech Republic’s history. According to police, the attacker killed 14 people and injured 25, 10 of them seriously.

The shooter is also dead, apparently after committing suicide, although the intervening police officers also fired at him. Police have yet to confirm his identity because he suffered devastating injuries prior to his death.

Officers are working on the assumption that the suspect is a 24-year-old student at the Faculty of Arts from a place called Hostouň in Central Bohemia who allegedly also killed his own father in their home before traveling to Prague. They are also investigating the possibility that he may have committed a double murder in the Klánovický Forest six days ago in which the media report that a 32-year-old man and his two-month-old daughter were killed.

The Czech Republic last held an official day of mourning on 3 February 2020 to honor the memory of the President of the Senate, Jaroslav Kubera (ODS), who passed away suddenly, and prior to that, an official day of mourning was held on 12 October 2019, the day of the funeral for singer Karel Gott. Three days of mourning were held before Christmas on 21-23 December 2011 to honor the memory of late President Václav Havel, and two days of mourning were held on 17 and 18 April 2010 after the tragic crash of an airplane near Smolensk with Polish representatives on board, including President Lech Kaczyński.
