College prep school pupils in Prague gave the Nazi salute and chanted Nazi slogans, eight have been officially reprimanded by the principal
The Czech School Inspectorate (ČŠI) is reviewing the case of the college preparatory school Gymnázium Chodovická in Prague whose pupils chanted Nazi slogans, gave the Nazi salute and made racist remarks about their schoolmates. The school has reported the official disciplinary measures taken against the eight pupils for whom it could be proven that they had committed these deeds, Deputy Central School Inspector Karel Kovář told the Czech News Agency (ČTK). According to him, the school has proceeded correctly and the Inspectorate remains in contact with its management about the case. CNN Prima News has reported on the incident.
According to CNN Prima News, the pupils involved are about 13 years old. “The main instigators have not yet been identified, but the school is continuing to investigate these transgressions,” Kovář said. Programs to prevent the recurrence of such behavior are being coordinated at the school by the methodologist for prevention, he said.
Kovář also said the police unit on extremism has investigated the school. “The cases will be suspended and the police will return to the school to contribute to the prevention programs,” he said. The pupils have accepted their punishment and are aware that they have done wrong, he believes. The Inspectorate found nothing wrong with the school’s approach to the incident.
The ČŠI is in touch with the school, collecting information and staying abreast of the steps taken by the school with regard to the problem. Given the seriousness of the incident, the school called the police, which Kovář said was the right thing to do. The pupils have been officially reprimanded by the principal. Should the school not get the situation under control, or should a complaint be filed against the school over its approach to the issue, then the Inspectorate would get more involved, Kovář said.
