In response to the recent tragedy in Brno, an informal remembrance event will be held on Saturday, 17 June at 14:00 CET at the Janáček Theater to honor the memory of the young Romani man who was murdered on 10 June. The Brno Team initiative is holding the remembrance event instead of the demonstration at that same location that was subsequently cancelled by its organizer.

ROMEA TV will broadcast live from Brno. Jozef Daniel, director of Brno Team, emphasized that Saturday’s event will be about remembrance and called on everybody who wants to visit that location with a different intention not to go there.

“It will be informal, we will light candles, say a few words about the person and that’s all. We decidedly will not be tarring everybody with the same brush,” Daniel said at a press conference on Thursday.

Last Saturday, 10 June, just before the start of the Ignis Brunensis fireworks show at the Brno Reservoir, a 37-year-old foreign national stabbed two men during an altercation; media identified him as a Ukrainian. The Romani youth subsequently died in hospital as a result of the injuries he sustained; some Romani people feel aggrieved by this incident and are responding with anti-Ukrainian sentiment.
