Sedláček gets suspended sentence for racist statements at National Party event

Pavel Sedláček has received a one-year prison sentence, suspended for a trial period of three years, due to racist statements he made in October 2008 at a gathering of the nationalist National Party (Národní strana - NS) in Prague. The District Court for Prague 1 found him guilty of the crimes of defaming a nation, ethnic group, race or belief, inciting hatred toward a group of persons and/or suppressing their rights and freedoms. Presiding Judge Libor Vávra reported the verdict to the Czech Press Agency today. The court order took effect on 26 February.

Czech and German NGOs plan to focus on the victims of violent hate crime

Several Czech and German NGOs involved in the “Hate Crime – Forgotten Victims” project plan to map the situation of victims of violent hate crime in the Czech Republic. Speaking at a press conference yesterday, NGO representatives told journalists there is a lack of statistics on the number of victims and the kinds of violence they encounter. Victims include not only the Roma, but foreigners, homosexuals and those involved in alternative cultures.

More than 600 people protest in Ústí nad Labem against neo-Nazis, children gassed in Lidice also "turn their backs" on them

Opponents of the neo-Nazis held a concert today to protest a march being convened on Saturday by the Autonomous Nationalist movement in Ústí nad Labem. More than 600 people gathered on Mírové náměstí. The organizers planned the high point of the evening to be a performance by the band Pražský výběr, fronted by outgoing Czech Human Rights and Minorities Minister Michael Kocáb.

The Spanish Presidency will insist on making “full use” of structural funds to promote the integration of the Gypsy community to achieve an “integral promotion of the Romani communities based on improvements in their housing and their environment”, said the Spanish Secretary of State for the European Union, Diego López Garrido, on Tuesday.

NGOs advocate for implementation of European Social Charter judgments in Bulgaria

At a workshop yesterday hosted by the European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC), the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee (BHC) and the Bulgarian Committee for the Protection Against Discrimination, activists praised the efforts of the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare to expand coverage of social assistance and health insurance but insisted that more needed to be done to protect the rights of Roma and all Bulgarian citizens.

Slovakia plans to remove Romani children from their families

Collections agent wants more than CZK 8 million from the town of Chomutov

Collections agent JUDr. Jan Paraska is billing the town of Chomutov CZK 8 million for collections performed on their behalf. Last year Paraska confiscated welfare benefits from debtors immediately after they were disbursed in cash at the town hall. The town is refusing to pay Paraska his fee. Instead, authorities are appealing to the Regional Court in Usti nad Labem, the Collections Chamber, and the Czech Justice Ministry. The news server iDNES.cz reported on the case today.

UN says Roma in the Czech Republic and Slovakia suffer discrimination

Today UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said Roma in the Czech Republic, Italy and Slovakia suffer from discrimination and the situation seems to be deteriorating. Her remarks were reported by AFP. Czech Human Rights and Minorities Minister Michael Kocáb told the Czech Press Agency that in his view the claim that the situation is worsening for the Roma in the Czech Republic does not correspond to reality.

The UK Association of Gypsy Women have registered grave concerns with the European Union Rule of Law Mission (EULEX) in Kosovo, on the disgraceful and degrading treatment metered out by the Kosovo Police in an incident on the 5th February where reportedly, batons were used in a brutal and cowardly attack on a small group of Roma people, beating elderly and young men, women and children with batons also calling for reinforcements, simply because the people voiced their protest against officials moving desperately needed aid.

France discriminates against Roma and Travellers in violation of the European Social Charter

The European Committee of Social Rights (ECSR) has found France in breach of Articles 16, 19, 30, 31 and E of the Revised European Social Charter (Social Charter) in respect of the housing and social inclusion situation of its Traveller and Romani populations, both itinerant and settled. The decision follows a collective complaint filed by the European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) which complained of inadequacies and discrimination in housing rights, access to voting rights and social inclusion measures.

Improving the impact on Roma discussed in Budapest

How to improve the impact of policies, programs and projects aimed at social inclusion of Roma was the main topic of a conference organized by European Roma Rights Center and Roma Education fund in Budapest on March 1. Tens of participants: high-level officials from European Commission (DG Employment and DG Regional Development), governmental officials, independent researchers and Roma NGO activists from 18 European countries took part in it. They discussed the first draft of the report “Activities to Improve the Impact of Policies, Programs and Projects Aimed at the Social Inclusion and Anti-Discrimination of Roma in the EU” prepared by ERRC and REF and commissioned by the European Commission.
