Slovakia: Voter preference for backers of Kotleba doubles

News server aktualne.sk reports that the ultra-right People’s Party-Our Slovakia (Lidová strana – Naše Slovensko or LSNS), chaired by neo-Nazi Marián Kotleba, has won new support over the last several weeks, but not enough to get into Parliament. Those are the results of the first public opinion poll conducted after Kotleba was surprisingly elected to head the Banská Bystrice Region last month.

The Polis agency conducted a survey in September which found that Kotleba’s party would win just 1.7 % of the vote, but according to this most recent study, the party is now favored by 3.4 % of voters. News server aktualne.sk reports that while that would not be enough to seat the neo-Nazis in Parliament, it would be enough to entitle them to a financial contribution from the state.

Kotleba is a right-wing extremist notorious for his anti-Romani statements. In the past he has also organized anti-Romani marches, among other things.

Polis conducted the survey by telephone from 24 – 28 November, speaking with 1 202 respondents 18 years old and older. The results show that if elections were to be held today, they would be won by the current governing party, Slovak PM Robert Fico’s Směr-sociální demokracie (Direction-Social Democracy) with 39.8 % of the vote.

Second place would go to the Christian Democrats with 9.6 % of the vote. Third place would go to the "Ordinary People" movement (hnutí Obyčejní lidé) with 8.7 % of the vote.
