In Lety u Písku, Czech Republic on Friday, 22 July at 13:00 CET the symbolic launch will take place of the demolition of the now-defunct industrial pig farm that was built over the site of a WWII-era concentration camp for Romani people there. The demolition is necessary to build a dignified memorial honoring Bohemia’s Holocaust victims of Romani and Sinti origin.

ROMEA TV will broadcast the ceremony live online. “On 22 July 2022 at 13:00, the construction site will be handed over to the winners of the public tender for the demolition of the facility of the former industrial pig farm at Lety u Písku. Through this symbolic act, the long-awaited demolition of the entire facility will begin,” Karolina Spielmannová, spokesperson for the Museum of Romani Culture, which is building the memorial and administering the site, told news server Romea.cz.

During the event, figures from political and public life will speak who have been advocating for the building of the new Lety u Písku Memorial to the Holocaust of the Roma and Sinti in Bohemia. Visitors will also be given one last opportunity to tour the grounds of the former industrial pig farm in the presence of activists and eyewitnesses to this history.
